The Philippines, through a Phil Younghusband brace, won 2-0 to 2008 Challenge Cup champions, India yesterday at Rangsala Dasrath Stadium, Nepal thereby pulling off a huge upset in the history of AFC Challenge Cup.  Azkals victory is reminiscent of the 2010 Suzuki Cup where the team also defeated former champions (Vietnam) with the same scoreline, 2-0.

Earning 3 points, Azkals’ hope for a semifinal stint is still alive while India has been knocked out of the competition.

The match started with an early threat from the former champions as Abranches found Vashum, whose strike went just inches above the bar.

On the 10th minute, Phil Younghusband calmly slotted home the opening goal after his brother James, who was on the receiving end of a Jason Sabio throw in, heads it to the former Chelsea reserve striker giving no chance for Karanjit Singh to save.

Phil Younghusband continued to be dangerous as two more chances opened for him before the first half ends. On the 36th minute, another Jason Sabio throw in created a chance for the Loyola Meralco Sparks striker who shot it wide, and on the 42nd minute, Phil’s shot was saved by the goalkeeper but the referee decided to call for a goal kick instead of a corner.

The Blue Tigers had a chance for an equalizer when Abranches fired a shot inside the penalty box however; it went straight to Etheridge keeping the scoreline 1-0 at half time.

On the 67th minute, Indians had another chance at goal when Nabi’s quick free kick found Eknath who heads it wide to Etheridge’s surprise.

Phil Younghusband then put the Azkals in the imposing position after scoring the 2nd goal in the 72nd minute. Misagh Bahadoran laid the ball to Phil who quickly passed it to his brother, James and, seeing that Phil has been left unmarked, James sends the ball back to Phil who shoots it past the Indian keeper.

The Indians had their best chance at goal when Chettri strikes the ball wide to an open goal following a pass from Singh on the 86th minute.

Philippines is set to face another former Challenge Cup champions, Tajikistan, on Tuesday.
